The art of fixing Vespa scooters is dying. This niche skill is a difficult one to master, especially with the increasing rarity of vintage Vespas. Our mechanic, Duy, has fixed over 1,000 Vespas! Check out this post for more info, and learn about how this scooter became legendary in Vietnam here.

Meet Saigon’s Oldest Public Letter Writer

You’re going to have to visit this magnificent post office to meet Mr. Duong Van Ngo, Saigon’s oldest public letter writer. I caught Mr. Duong around 3:05 PM, nearing the end of his 3:30 PM sharp work day. Although Mr. Duong had his plastic bag filled with his treasured belongings to head home, he offered me a seat, and assured me I wasn’t a bother; he wouldn’t leave a minute before 3:30 PM. Mr. Duong told me he started working at the post office when he was a mere 16 years old. Today, he is 85. Although elderly and delicate,…

Vietnamese Bird Club Culture

Vietnamese bird club culture is one that's overlooked by travellers, but it's extremely interesting and there's more to it than just sitting and drinking coffee. While wandering around the streets of Saigon, or any town in Vietnam, you'll notice an abundance of classic bird cages with delightfully chirping birds inside. These birds are more than just pets, they're a hobby. They're a lifestyle. Every morning, bird club enthusiasts like Lam in the video above go to the park, birds in hand. These enthusiasts, typically older men, hang up their bird cages and grab a coffee. It's common for these…

The Best Phở in Saigon

Phở - the archetypal dish of Vietnam. Travellers from far and wide come to Vietnam, hoping that they will eat the best bowl of Phở. We've been in Saigon for a long time, and we think we've found the best bowl of Phở in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City). It's a super local place where you'll rarely see a tourist at a table. First- we need to explain what makes one bowl of pho better than another. There's a few key components to Phở, which are combined in a bowl for one outstanding meal. You'll be craving this dish for…

A nice review from Liz Harding. Thanks a lot Liz.

Vietnam by Vespa Let me start by saying, this is one of the best things I’ve ever done – I hope this post is able to do the awesomeness of these tours justice! I first heard about Vietnam Vespa Adventures from a colleague who had been apart of one of their week long tours with her husband. She absolutely raved about their tour, despite her initial reservations, and made sure to drill it into my head as a must-do when she found out I was heading to Vietnam (not that I needed much convincing).... Remarkable Time Lapse of Saigon Traffic

Saigon motorcycle traffic is, deservedly, some of the most famous (notorious?) in the world, and every visitor with a smartphone or a video-enabled DSLR camera at some point cannnot resist the impulse to capture it on film. We've therefore seen a whole lot of amateur video footage of Saigon traffic. And being motorbike-riding residents ourselves, we see it every day from street level. But we've never, ever seen any video footage of local traffic as compelling as this short time lapse, posted 5 days ago to Vimeo by local expat photog Rob Whitworth. Clocking in at a little over two…

Vocal Locals

It probably goes without saying that most of the guests who join us on our tours are from out of town. But in the past few months we've found that more and more of our passengers are locals -- people who are living in Saigon and have heard of us one way or another, eager for a chance to see the city with new eyes or to entertain visiting friends and family who've exhausted the limited sightseeing options listed in the guidebooks. Nothing makes us happier than to introduce area residents, whether short-term passers-through or long-timers, to a side of…

The Kids Are All Right

Last Saturday, the whole VVA team cruised out to Saigon's District 2 where we set up a booth and a dazzling display of promotional materials at The Deck for their quarterly Bazaar @ The Deck, where a horde of regional vendors decamped on the swank grounds of the riverside restaurant/bar to ply their wares in front of the local Anh Phu and Thao Dien residents. We rubbed elbows with custom tailors and adventure trek services, makers of gecko-shaped refrigerator magnets (bought one) and handbags crafted from recycled plastic shopping bags (bought two), vendors of T-shirts bearing images of historic Vietnam…

Fall Promotion for Anh Phu Neighbors!

Many thanks to everyone at Saturday's Bazaar @ The Deck who took a free Vespa ride courtesy of Vietnam Vespa Adventures! We spoke to scores of you about the half-day and evening tours we offer in Saigon as well as the multi-day trips we provide to Mui Ne, Nha Trang, and (soon) to Hue. It was a pleasure meeting you all! Many of those we spoke to Saturday accepted a coupon from us good for 15% off any of our local tours. We only regret we weren't able to give out more of those vouchers. Therefore we'd like to extend…

Travelfish.org Gives Us a Great Big Blog Hug

We've long been fans of online travel guide Travelfish, which specializes in Southeast Asian destinations. In fact, Travelfish is our own first go-to resource whenever we're doing any exploring in the region. We've used it in Bali, Singapore, Cambodia, Malaysia, the Thai islands, and of course here at home in Vietnam (if we ever get to Laos, we'll use it there, too). So we practically wet ourselves with excitement last week when Travelfish Vietnam editor Angela Schonberg contacted us about joining one of our Saigon After Dark tours for a possible write-up. She and her boyfriend joined us on a…

Comme ci, comme ça

Last Tuesday evening we were joined on our Saigon After Dark tour by Christina and Danny from Richmond, Virginia. We've got to hand it to this über-cool couple, who described themselves right away as "very laid-back," which was a huge relief to us as it was pouring rain like the end of the world for most of the night. What's more, we quickly learned that both Christina and Danny are strict vegetarians - as in they eat "nothing that moves." This was their first evening in Vietnam, so these two had not yet learned that in Vietnam, anything that moves…

Moms’ Night Out with the Williamses on Saigon After Dark

The Williams family from Brisbane joined us last night for our SAD tour (we really need a new acronym for that one, don't we? Perhaps SDK?). A blast was had, even though Dad Williams stayed home at the hotel. It all evened out, as we were joined by VVA General director Ton That Thien Bao and his mom visiting from Orange County, California.
