Exploring Ho Chi Minh City is always an adventure, but discovering it on a Vespa tour is something entirely different. From weaving through bustling markets to gliding past historical landmarks, experiencing the city's sights and sounds from the back of a Vespa scooter provides a perspective like no other. This is exactly what I found when I joined Vietnam Vespa Adventures on their Insider’s Saigon Day Tour, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I made in Vietnam.
A Bucket List Experience: Riding Through Saigon on a Vintage Vespa
I had placed this tour on my bucket list of things to do in Ho Chi Minh City even before moving to Vietnam, and I was eager to see if it lived up to my expectations. Spoiler alert: it did.
As soon as I arrived at the meeting point, I was welcomed by the friendly guides who gave us a quick safety briefing. Hopping onto my vintage Vespa, I immediately felt transported back in time. The retro aesthetic of these restored bikes added a nostalgic charm, making the ride all the more exhilarating.
Our guide, Dieu, was fantastic. She shared historical insights, local stories, and fun facts throughout the journey. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveler, having a knowledgeable guide truly enhances the experience.
The Route: Unveiling Saigon’s Hidden Gems
The route was carefully curated to showcase both iconic landmarks and hidden gems. Some of the highlights included:
Ben Thanh Market: A lively hub of local vendors selling everything from street food to handicrafts.
Thich Quang Duc Monument: A historical landmark commemorating the Buddhist monk who protested during the Vietnam War.
Cholon (Chinatown): A vibrant district rich in Chinese culture, temples, and markets.
The Secret Café: A tucked-away coffee shop where we enjoyed the famous Vietnamese egg coffee.
Every stop had something unique to offer, giving us a well-rounded view of Ho Chi Minh City's diverse culture.
A Taste of Saigon’s Street Food Scene
No tour of Vietnam is complete without indulging in Vietnamese cuisine, and this Vespa tour ensured we sampled the best. We stopped at a local eatery specializing in banh mi, Vietnam’s beloved baguette sandwich, and later savored a warm bowl of pho. But the highlight? A traditional banh xeo, a crispy rice pancake filled with shrimp, pork, and bean sprouts, served with fresh herbs and fish sauce.
Each dish was an explosion of flavors, and the experience of eating street-side, just like the locals, made it even more authentic.
Riding at Night: A Magical Saigon Experience
As the sun set, the city transformed into a dazzling spectacle of neon lights and buzzing nightlife. Vietnam Vespa Adventures also offers the Hanoi After Dark Tour (book here), and experiencing Saigon at night on a Vespa was just as magical.
The streets were alive with energy, from rooftop bars playing live music to bustling food stalls grilling up fresh seafood. We made a final stop at a hidden jazz club where we enjoyed local performances, a perfect ending to a perfect day.
Why a Vespa Tour is the Best Way to See Ho Chi Minh City
Reflecting on my experience, I can confidently say that a Vespa tour is the ultimate way to explore Saigon. The combination of history, culture, food, and adventure makes it an unforgettable journey.
If you're planning a trip and wondering what to do in Ho Chi Minh City, I highly recommend checking out Vietnam Vespa Adventures (see all tours). Whether it’s a daytime exploration or a night-time food tour, you won’t regret swapping a taxi ride for a Vespa scooter adventure.
Final Thoughts: A Must-Do Experience
To all future travelers: skip the taxi, the bus, and the car – hop on a Vespa instead! My daughter and I had an absolute blast, and I can’t wait to take another tour the next time I visit.
A huge thank you to the Vietnam Vespa Adventures team for organizing such an incredible experience. Well done!
