Hue is a city deeply rooted in Vietnam’s history, but beyond its imperial palaces and citadels lies a rich artistic heritage that remains largely undiscovered by mainstream tourism. If you're looking for unique things to do in Hue, immersing yourself in its traditional folk art scene is an enriching experience.
Our journey began early in the morning, weaving through the bustling streets on a Hue tour that took us far beyond the usual tourist trails. After a quick stop for a cup of robust Vietnamese coffee, our Vespa Adventures guide led us to a local market, where the scent of fresh herbs and grilled meats filled the air. From here, we embarked on a small wooden boat, gently floating across the Perfume River, a passageway to the past where old-world traditions continue to thrive.
Meeting the Master Artisan & Enjoy Folk Art
Upon reaching the opposite bank, we were greeted by our Vespa drivers, who took us through scenic landscapes of lush rice paddies and traditional villages. After a winding journey through Hue’s countryside, we arrived at a quaint home belonging to a master artisan who has dedicated his life to preserving one of Hue’s most treasured art forms—woodblock printing.
Inside his modest yet charming workshop, two wooden tables were neatly arranged with handcrafted paper, ink, and intricate woodblocks. He welcomed us with warm hospitality, offering glasses of fresh green tea before diving into the history of his craft. Using centuries-old techniques, he demonstrated how these prints have been used to depict folklore, religious symbols, and elements of daily life.

Hands-On Experience: Creating Our Own Prints
With a twinkle in his eye, the artisan invited us to try our hand at making our own prints. He asked if we knew our zodiac signs based on the Chinese calendar. When I responded, "I am the year of the dog," he nodded and carefully selected a beautifully carved woodblock of a dog. He then demonstrated how to press the block onto ink before gently transferring the design onto a sheet of handmade paper.
We each took turns following his meticulous instructions, creating unique prints that we could take home as keepsakes. It was fascinating to learn how this ancient technique has remained largely unchanged over the years.
Painting with Natural Dyes
After our printing session, we moved to another area where we could add color to our artwork using natural pigments made from locally sourced materials. The artisan’s wife, a skilled painter herself, explained how the dyes were extracted from tree bark, fruits, and minerals. I chose a vibrant palette to bring my dog print to life, while others in our group opted for more traditional hues.
The artisan chuckled at my unconventional color choices but seemed genuinely pleased by our enthusiasm. Though our conversations were limited by language barriers, his expressions and gestures spoke volumes about his passion for preserving Hue’s folk art.
The Rich Artistic Traditions of Hue Countryside
This experience was not just about creating art—it was about connecting with a piece of Hue’s cultural identity. These time-honored practices are fading in modern Vietnam, but efforts from artisans like our host ensure their survival.
